How to Implement 4DX
Follow these proven steps to implement the 4 Disciplines of Execution and achieve your Wildly Important Goals.
Identify Your WIG
Choose the one goal that matters most. If every other goal stayed at its current level, what's the one achievement that would make everything else feel secondary?
GoalCadence Enhancement:
Guided WIG selection with team voting, impact scoring, and alignment tools to ensure focus.
Define Lead Measures
Identify 2-3 predictive, influenceable activities for each WIG. These are the things your team can do this week to move the WIG forward.
GoalCadence Enhancement:
Lead measure templates by industry, with correlation tracking to see what actually moves your WIG.
Build the Scoreboard
Create a simple, visible scoreboard the team can update themselves. It should show at a glance: are we winning or losing?
GoalCadence Enhancement:
Drag-and-drop scoreboard builder with real-time updates, trend lines, and win/loss indicators.
Launch WIG Sessions
Start weekly 20-30 minute WIG sessions. Each person reports on last week's commitments, reviews the scoreboard, and makes new commitments.
GoalCadence Enhancement:
Pre-built WIG session agenda with timers, commitment tracking, and automatic scoreboard review.
Execute Weekly
Team members make specific commitments each week that move lead measures. The cadence creates relentless accountability.
GoalCadence Enhancement:
Weekly commitment reminders, completion tracking, and streak indicators to maintain momentum.
Review and Celebrate
Track WIG progress over time. Celebrate milestones, adjust lead measures that aren't working, and maintain momentum.
GoalCadence Enhancement:
Automated progress reports, milestone celebrations, and historical WIG achievement dashboards.
The best implementations start with one WIG and one team. Prove the process, then expand across the organization.
4DX as the execution layer for OKRs and Scaling Up
Most growing companies run more than one framework. 4DX is built for layering — its execution discipline (WIGs, lead measures, scoreboard, cadence) works on top of any goal-setting system. GoalCadence supports the blend natively.
4DX + OKRs
OKRs set the direction. 4DX drives the execution. Use OKRs to define ambitious quarterly objectives with measurable Key Results. Then promote your most critical Objective to a WIG and apply 4DX execution discipline.
- ✓Objectives become WIGs. Promote your top 1-2 OKR Objectives to Wildly Important Goals to focus the team.
- ✓Key Results are lag measures. Add 4DX-style lead measures alongside each Key Result to track the predictive activities that drive the result.
- ✓Compelling Scoreboard for KRs. Visualize Key Result progress as a scoreboard the team updates themselves.
- ✓Cadence of Accountability. Run weekly WIG sessions tied to OKR check-ins — every team member commits to specific lead-measure activities for the week.
Best fit for teams using OKRs at scale who want stronger execution discipline on the few goals that matter most.

Scaling Up sets the strategic frame. 4DX gives Priorities the discipline to actually finish.Use Scaling Up's One-Page Strategic Plan and quarterly Priorities for direction, then apply 4DX execution discipline to the most critical Priorities.
- ✓Priorities become WIGs. Your top 1-2 quarterly Priorities get the WIG treatment — narrow focus, lead measures, scoreboard.
- ✓Critical Number is a lag measure. Scaling Up's Critical Number naturally fits the 4DX lag-measure role; add lead measures to drive it.
- ✓KPIs feed the Scoreboard. Promote the 2-3 KPIs most predictive of your Priority into a player-built compelling scoreboard.
- ✓Daily huddle + WIG session. Layer 4DX's weekly WIG session into Scaling Up's meeting rhythm — daily huddle for ops, WIG session for the strategic Priorities.
Best fit for Scaling Up teams whose quarterly Priorities tend to slip into the daily Whirlwind without finishing.
